The Feynan Ecolodge which is part of the Dana Biosphere Reserve was established and built by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature in 2005 to incorporate four different bio-zones combining the different landscapes from the region. Since, the Feynan Ecolodge became the first example of this type of Lodge in the region.
The Feynan Ecolodge was established to provide alternative revenues for the local communities to replace the unsustainable and environmentally unstable copper mining which was a hub throughout the years in the Feynan area.
By providing opportunities to the local communities to work with nature and the wild, the Feynan Ecolodge now employs many of the local community who work with the lodge to provide exceptional experiences to travelers.
The lodge only employs people from the local community in addition to employing women who do not usually get any employment opportunities in these communities. The lodge is not accessible by regular vehicles and require 4X4 vehicles to get to the location, which is also provided by the local community.
The lodge which was built in the shape of a caravanserai has 26 rooms accommodating up to 60 persons. The lodge concentrates on sustainable practices so electricity which is generated through solar panels is used in very few essential areas, while lighting for the lodge, rooms, and other areas use candles produced by the local community. The exclusively vegetarian foods are sourced from local farms within immediate proximity to the reserve and springs are the only source of water for the lodge. Alcohol is not allowed in the lodge in respect to the local culture.
Travelers however, can enjoy a multitude of activities from treks, to hikes, cycling, to local experiences in foods, crafts, farming, among other activities while staying at the lodge.
